Acupuncture for Pregnant Woman

For over 3,000 years, acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine have provided holistic health support to women throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum periods. Today, acupuncture is widely recognized as safe and effective for helpling relieve a wide range of prenatal and postnatal symptoms.

In addition to providing relief for common pregnancy-related discomfort, acupuncture also promotes mental relaxation.  "Pre-birth acupuncture" is also highly effective for helping to prepare a pregnant woman for labor, potentially reducing its duration and minimizing the necessity for additional interventions.

Benefits of Acupuncture During Pregnancy

Acupuncture helps relieve common pregnancy-related symptoms such as heartburn, swelling in the legs, carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, back pain, headaches, and morning sickness. Since pregnancy restricts the use of certain pain medications, having acupuncture as an additional tool can be invaluable when Tylenol falls short. Here are some additional pregnancy symptoms that acupuncture can help with:

  • Alleviate Depression

It's not uncommon for women to experience depression during pregnancy, affecting nearly 1 in 4. However, there is a potential solution that goes beyond general acupuncture or massage. A targeted form of acupuncture has shown promising results in alleviating symptoms of depression in pregnant women. In fact, a study revealed that those who received tailored acupuncture experienced a significant reduction in the severity of their symptoms. This finding highlights the potential of acupuncture as a valuable treatment option for pregnant women dealing with depression.

  • Reduce Body Aches and Pains

During pregnancy, the hormone relaxin loosens joints, which, combined with the added weight as your body grows, can lead to nagging pelvic or back pain in the second and third trimesters. Acupuncture has been proven effective (and safe) for alleviating lower back pain, as indicated by a 2021 study and a 2018 study. What’s more, acupuncture can provide relief for other discomforts, both physical and emotional.

  • Relieve Morning Sickness

Acupuncture has been proven for its efficacy in alleviating nausea and vomiting, both during and outside of pregnancy. One notable review, although conducted on a large scale, focused specifically on the stimulation of the P6 acupressure point, also known as the spleen channel. Practitioners firmly believe that targeting P6 can positively influence the digestive system.

Interestingly, participants in studies conducted outside of pregnancy reported greater relief from acupuncture for nausea and vomiting compared to those who relied solely on standard medications. These findings not only highlight the potential benefits of acupuncture but also underscore its relevance and excitement as a viable option for managing nausea and vomiting.

  • Healthy Labor & Delivery

Study revealed that women in the acupuncture group had a lower likelihood of using additional pain-relieving measures, such as epidurals, during labor. Furthermore, the use of acupuncture did not impact the overall duration of labor. Remarkably, babies in the acupuncture group also achieved the highest Apgar scores. These results have been supported by more recent research. A comprehensive review conducted in 2020 analyzed 28 newer studies and concluded that acupuncture can effectively manage labor pain and reduce the need for epidurals or other medications.

Safety of Acupuncture During Pregnancy

According to an NIH study on maternity acupuncture,  the treatment is considered safe for most pregnancies, with rare severe reactions or complications. While there may be mild complications such as temporary pain or swelling at the needle insertion point, they are generally not long-lasting.

Your acupuncturist can provide treatment before pregnancy, during all three trimesters, and even during the postpartum period.

I saw Dr. He at the end of my pregnancy and was very pleased! I needed her to help induce labor at 41 & 42 weeks. She is so knowledgeable! I love that she didn't do the same thing every time. She also gave great advice for post partum healing and health-- priceless! I had my sweet baby at home the day after 42 weeks so I didn't have to be induced in a hospital!
